A man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after he drove his Volkswagen Golf into the side of a police car in the Black Country on Saturday morning.

Two officers, who were on a routine patrol, were both taken to hospital after the incident at the junction of Smithy Lane and Tansey Green Road, in Dudley, at around 2.40am.

The Golf had mounted the pavement before the collision.

A 44-year-old man from Dudley was arrested at the scene.

One officer remained in hospital on Saturday afternoon, although police reported that his injuries were not thought to be life-changing.

Chief Inspector Jack Hadley said: “Both officers were extremely lucky not to suffer more serious injuries.

“The driver of the other car had lost control of his vehicle and the end result could have been far worse.”

  1. The Express and Star? We’re lucky the headline wasn’t “Police Officers drain public resources with unnecessary hospital bill following an accident which, despite all evidence to the contrary, was probably their own fault”
