  1. Currently in training and this issue has been raised 2 or 3 times. I think they said the search should be conducted by the gender requested by the detainee. If that fails then by the gender as to which the officer defines. Although I don’t think there is a definitive answer?!

  2. I agree that you should ask the detained person and get them to endorse the custody record. This has happened at Leyland in Lancashire so they may be able to help. Don’t know the outcome it went to a civil suit when the transgender objected.

  3. A street search or pat down has always been able to be conducted by either male or female officers. (As it’s non evasive)
    Women search men and women and vice versa.
    If it’s strip search or more personal search then whatever sex you identify as.

  4. As Custody Sgt I have had this situation. I listened to the detainee’s request but also took into account the feelings and dignity of the officers. The prisoner was a pre-op male to female, dressed as a woman but still very masculine. No women officer was happy to do the search & I thought their views were important too. A male officer did it after the detainee signed to consent to him doing it.
